Create an Exam
Everything about an exam is managed from one place. Open your course, choose Exams in the sidebar, and you see every exam in the course. Create a new exam opens the creation form; Import an exam copies one you or a colleague has already built.
Choose the Exam Mode
Mode is the first decision, and the only one you cannot change afterwards.
An Exam is the end-of-semester case. You set a fixed window, every student works inside it, and you assess the submissions afterwards — manually, automatically, or both. Results appear on the date you choose.
A Test Exam is practice. Instead of one fixed window for everybody, you set a window within which each student may start whenever they like, and the working time then runs from their own start. Students get the automated assessment for programming and quiz exercises as soon as they submit, so no manual correction is needed. For a test exam the date fields are labelled Start of working window and End of working window rather than start and end of working time, because they bound when a student may begin rather than when everyone writes.
Fill In the Creation Form
The form is divided into the sections below, in this order. Only the exam title and the three conduction dates are mandatory; leave a date blank and that step of the exam simply does not happen, which the form says above the assessment dates.
Exam Configuration
Exam Title names the exam everywhere it appears. Examiner, Module number and Course name are printed on the exam and on the score export, so fill them in as your examination office expects them.
Exam with attendance check marks the exam as one where supervisors verify who is sitting at each machine. It is what the Exam Participation Checker app works against.
Exam Conduction
Three dates define when the exam happens, and all three are required:
- Visible from — students see the exam and can open its start page, but cannot reach the exercises yet.
- Start of working time — students may begin.
- End of working time — students may no longer work.
Working Time (minutes) is derived from the two working-time dates rather than entered directly; editing it moves the end date. Grace period (seconds) is the extra time students get to hand in after the working time ends, and defaults to 180 seconds. No new submissions are possible during the grace period — it exists so that pressing submit at the last second still works.
Exam Exercises
Maximum number of points for exam is the total the exam is worth. Number of exercises in exam must equal the number of exercise groups you intend the exam to have. You can leave it empty while building the exam, but it has to be set before Artemis can generate the individual exams.
Randomize order of exercise groups gives each student the exercises in a different order.
Exam Assessment and Student Review
Number of correction rounds in exam set to two lets a second tutor assess each exam after the first, which is described under second correction.
Release Date of Results is when students see their results.
Submission Overview Visible From controls when a student can open the summary of their own submitted exam — the questions, their answers, and the PDF export. Leave it empty and the summary appears immediately after submission. Setting it later matters for an exam written in several shifts, so that early submitters cannot pass the content on to a later shift. It has to fall after the end of working time and no later than the release date of results.
Begin of Student Review and End of Student Review bound the window in which students may inspect their assessed exam and object to it. See Student Review and Complaints.
Exam Solutions
Example Solution Publication Date is when students who participated can see the example solutions of every exercise in the exam. Leave it blank to publish no solutions at all.
Exam Texts
Exam start text and Exam end text are shown on the start and end pages during conduction. Use the start text for the rules of the exam and the end text for what happens next.
Exam start confirmation text and Exam end confirmation text are the declarations a student signs with their full name before starting and after finishing. Artemis ships defaults for both, so change them only if your institution requires different wording.
Import an Existing Exam
Import an exam lists every exam from the courses where you are an instructor. Choose one and Artemis copies its configuration into a new exam in your course.
The import form is the creation form with everything except the dates already filled in, so review it as described above and set the timeline for your own exam. You can also select which exercises come across with the exam; the exercise group import explains what is and is not copied.
