General Information

Artemis has five exercise types — programming, quiz, modeling, text and file upload — and they have the same skeleton. What differs is what a student hands in and how it is marked.

What Every Exercise Has

  • Release Date — when the exercise becomes visible. An exercise without one is visible immediately.
  • Start Date — when students may begin working. Without one, they may begin as soon as it is released.
  • Due Date — when submission closes. Assessment cannot start before it has passed.
  • Assessment Due Date — when the assessments are published. Everything marked before it is released at once on that date, so no student sees their result before the others.
  • Points and Bonus Points — what the exercise is worth, and Include this exercise in the course score calculation, which decides whether those points count toward the course score, count as bonus, or not at all.

Exercises of the same topic can be bundled into a variant group, which gives them a shared timeline, lets them share a points cap, and shows them to students as one entry. Artemis can also generate a variant of an existing exercise with AI. See Exercise Variants and Generate Variants with AI.

How Students Find an Exercise

Exercises in the course navigation opens the course's exercise list. The sidebar groups the exercises by where they are in time, so a student sees what needs doing before what is finished:

  • Future — has not begun: its start date, or its release date when it has no start date, is still ahead. An exercise in this group stays here whatever its due date says.
  • Due Soon — has begun and is due within three days.
  • Current — has begun and is due more than three days from now.
  • Past — the due date has passed.
  • No Date — has no due date. An exercise that has begun belongs here even when it has a release date and a start date; it is the missing due date that decides.

A quiz is grouped a little more generously: one whose release, start or due date is today, or that is open now, or that is released without a due date, counts as Current.

A group holding more than five exercises is split into weekly subsections, so a long-running course stays navigable. Searching turns the subsections off and lists the matches flat.
