Exercises
Overview
Artemis offers different exercise types to help you practice and demonstrate your knowledge. Each exercise type has its own characteristics and ways of submission.
Exercise Types
Artemis supports the following exercise types:
- Quiz Exercises: Test your knowledge with multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, and short-answer questions
- Modeling Exercises: Create UML diagrams and other models using the integrated Apollon editor
- Programming Exercises: Write and submit code solutions with automated testing and feedback
- Text Exercises: Write free-text answers to open-ended questions
- File Upload Exercises: Submit files such as documents, images, or other content
Common Exercise Features
All exercises share these common features:
- Release Date: The date when the exercise becomes visible to you
- Due Date: The deadline for submitting your solution
- Assessment Due Date: The date when you can view feedback from instructors
- Points: Points you can earn, which may count toward your course score or serve as bonus points
Two further features are available depending on the exercise:
- Exercise Variants: Your instructors can offer the same task in several equivalent versions. They appear as one entry in your exercise list, and you choose which version to work on. See Exercise Variants.
- Practice Mode: For supported course exercises, you can keep working after the due date without affecting your grade. See Practice Mode for the exercise types that offer it.
The Exercise View
Whatever the type, an exercise opens in one view that holds everything it needs: you start it, work on it, submit it and read your results without leaving the page.
- The work area holds what you do: the code editor, the modeling canvas, the text editor, the quiz questions or the upload form.
- Beside it, panels give you the Exercise Details, the course communication feed, and the Iris tutor where your course offers it. Exercise Details opens with your points and the difficulty, followed by the problem statement. Drag the divider to give either side more room.
- The header stays on top with the exercise title, the deadline and your status, and every action you can take right now: start, submit, request AI feedback, or get the repository URL. While a quiz is running, it also shows the time you have left.
Your Results
The status tile shows your latest result. Click the arrow next to it to open the result history and see all your earlier results for this exercise, newest first. In text, modeling and quiz exercises you can select an entry to open the submission it belongs to, so you can compare attempts without leaving the exercise. Programming and file upload results are listed but not selectable.
Results earned in practice mode are labeled Practice, and AI-generated feedback is marked with its own icon, so you can always tell what counted toward your grade.
