Overview

You can find published lectures of a course by clicking on the tab labeled Lectures.

Lecture Organization and Navigation

The lecture overview provides an organized view of all course lectures. The sidebar displays lectures categorized by time periods to help navigate course content efficiently:

  • Future: Upcoming lectures that haven't started yet
  • Current: Lectures that started within the last 7 days, or lectures whose start and end dates span the current date
  • Past: Lectures whose end date has passed (or that started more than 7 days ago if no end date is set)
  • No Date: Lectures without specific dates assigned

When a section (e.g., No date) contains more than 5 lectures, Artemis may create weekly subsections to improve navigation, though the exact grouping depends on lecture dates and distribution across weeks.

Lecture Details

Clicking on a lecture leads to the lecture details page, where you can see the title, description, lecture units, and attachments.

Lecture Units

Students see all released lecture units on the lecture details page. Clicking on a unit opens its contents. If a unit is linked to a competency, expanding the unit reveals the associated competency information.

Students complete lecture units automatically (e.g., when they are opened) or manually by clicking the checkbox.

Unit Types

Lectures can be divided into lecture units, which can be of the following types:

  • Text unit: A text with markup.
  • Exercise unit: An exercise from the same course.
  • Attachment Video unit: A file that the student may download and an embedded video stream or video from an external source. Students complete this unit when they download the attachment.
  • Online unit: A link to an external website. Students complete this unit once they navigate to the external website.

Viewing an Attachment Video Unit

An attachment video unit can contain a PDF, a video, or both. You can read the slides and watch the recording on the lecture page without downloading them first.

Slides

The PDF viewer has a toolbar above the slides. Zoom in and Zoom out change the size, Go to page jumps to a slide by number, and Search in document finds a word across the whole deck, with Next match and Previous match stepping through the hits and Clear search ending it. Download PDF saves the file, and Open fullscreen opens the PDF on its own across the window.

Slides your instructor has hidden are not part of what you see, so the numbering of the file you read can differ from the one in a recording of the same lecture.

Video and Transcript

The unit plays its video on the page. Where a transcript exists, it fills a column beside the video: the line being spoken is highlighted as the recording plays, and clicking any line jumps the video to that moment. Search transcript... above the column finds a word in it, with Previous result and Next result moving between the hits and Clear search ending it. Drag the divider between video and transcript to change how they share the width, and double-click it to put it back. A unit whose transcript is still being generated shows the video without one.

Combined View / Fullscreen

If Iris is enabled for your course, you can open a unit with a PDF or a video in a combined view / fullscreen, except in tutorial lectures. It puts the material across the window with Iris beside it. When the unit has both video and slides, they are stacked, and you can drag the divider to give either one more room.

The chat in this view uses the lecture containing the open unit as its topic, so its topic selector is hidden. Separately, Iris receives the current slide page and, after you have played the video, its current moment with each question. This lets you ask about what you are viewing without naming the page or time. See Iris for more about this viewing context.

Synchronizing Slides and Video

When the unit has slides and a video that Artemis plays itself — a streamed recording or a YouTube video — and Artemis can match slide numbers in the transcript to PDF pages, Synchronize slides and video appears in the combined view / fullscreen. Switch it on to have the slides follow the recording. Switch it off to read ahead while the video keeps playing. Iris can also move the slides or the video to a relevant place; see When Iris Shows You the Place.

Following a Citation or Search Result

Opening a lecture from an Iris citation or a global search result takes you to the named unit. A citation with a material version opens its exact page or moment only after Artemis confirms that the material still matches. A search result from the lecture content uses its page or moment directly, while a result for a lecture unit itself opens the unit without a position. Clicking the same citation or lecture content result again takes you back to that position if you have moved away.

If the unit itself has been deleted in the meantime, the lecture still opens and Artemis tells you that the linked content no longer exists.

Competencies

Instructors can create competencies, which are desired learning objectives, and link lecture units to them. See the Adaptive Learning documentation for more information.
