Courses and Exercises in VS Code

Your courses and exercises are in the Artemis view in the sidebar. It opens on the dashboard, and every other page has a back link at the top.

The Dashboard

Current Workspace Exercise names the exercise whose repository is open in VS Code; select it to open that exercise. If no exercise is open, it says so, and Choose next to the heading opens the course list.

Recent Courses lists up to three courses with up to four of their exercises each: the ones you opened last, and until you have opened any, those with the most recently released exercises. Show All opens the full course list.

Tools & Settings holds Browse Courses, Open Settings, Open Artemis in browser, Submission Setup (see Working on an Exercise), Bug Report, which opens the extension's issue tracker, and Logout from Artemis.

Finding a Course

Browse Courses opens All Courses, every course you are enrolled in. Search by title, semester or description, narrow the list by Type and Semester, and change the order with Sort by. Clear Filters resets all three.

Courses whose end date has passed are archived and are not loaded at first. Load Archived Courses adds them in a section of their own.

A Course

Selecting a course shows its title, description and semester, and lists its exercises. Each row shows the exercise type as an icon, the due date and the points; the exercise that is open in your workspace carries an Open badge. Search the list or change its order with the dropdown beside the search field.

Ask on the Ask Iris card opens the Iris chat with this course as its topic; see Iris in VS Code.

An Exercise

An exercise page starts with the title, the points and the time left until the due date. Below come your participation, the Ask Iris card and the problem statement under Exercise Description. The chevron beside the title shows more details, such as the release date and whether the exercise is graded.

Starting an Exercise

An exercise you have not started says Not Participating Yet. Start Exercise creates your repository in Artemis, exactly as starting it in the browser does. Open in browser opens the same exercise in Artemis.

After the due date, Start Exercise becomes Practice. It starts the exercise in practice mode, where your work no longer counts towards your grade; see Practice Mode. Exams are not available in the extension.

For text, modeling, quiz and file upload exercises, the page asks you to complete them in the browser and only offers Open in browser.

A Started Exercise

After you start, the participation block is headed Repository Ready. It shows the state of your local repository, the Submit button and the result of your latest submission.

As in Artemis, the problem statement shows for each task how many of its tests pass. Selecting a task shows the feedback for that task's tests only.

Working on an Exercise covers cloning, submitting and reading the results.
