Settings and Commands of the VS Code Extension
Open the extension's settings with Open Settings on the dashboard, or search for artemis in the VS Code
settings.
Settings
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
artemis.serverUrl | https://artemis.tum.de | The Artemis server the extension connects to. Artemis: Set Server URL sets it from a list. |
artemis.startPage | dashboard | The page the extension opens after sign-in: dashboard, course-list, workspace-course (the course of the open exercise) or workspace-exercise (the open exercise itself). |
artemis.showStartPageSuggestion | on | Offers to make the open exercise your start page when the extension finds one in your workspace. |
artemis.defaultClonePath | empty | The folder new exercise repositories are cloned into. Empty means you choose a location for each clone. |
artemis.showSetDefaultClonePathPrompt | on | Asks for a default folder on your first clone. |
artemis.defaultCommitMessage | Solution submission via Iris extension | The commit message Submit uses when you do not write one. |
artemis.showUnsavedChangesWarning | on | Warns on the exercise page when a file has unsaved changes that a submission would leave out. |
artemis.iris.sendUncommittedChanges | on | Lets Iris read your work in progress (unsaved, uncommitted and unpushed changes) when you send it a message. |
artemis.iris.proactiveCodeEgress | ask | Your consent for proactive help: enabled, disabled, or ask, which leaves it off. Not available in the Open VSX version. |
The Open VSX version, which EduIDE uses, ships different defaults: artemis.startPage is workspace-exercise, and
the two prompts are off. They suit EduIDE, where the workspace already contains your exercise, and apply equally when
you install the Open VSX version in VSCodium.
Commands
Run these from the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P, or Cmd+Shift+P on macOS).
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
| Artemis: Login | Opens the login page |
| Artemis: Logout | Signs you out and removes the stored session |
| Artemis: Set Server URL | Chooses the Artemis server |
| Artemis: Set Default Exercise Folder | Chooses the folder exercise repositories are cloned into |
| Artemis: Reload Iris Chat | Reloads the Iris chat view |
| Artemis: Check Iris Health Status | Shows whether Iris is reachable, and how many of your messages are left if the course limits them |
| Artemis: Check WebSocket Connection Status | Shows whether the live connection to Artemis is up |
| Artemis: Connect WebSocket | Reconnects the live connection |
EduIDE does not offer the login, logout and server commands, because the workspace provides the session, nor Artemis: Set Default Exercise Folder, because the workspace already contains the repository.
Connection Status
Build results, submission status and Iris answers reach the extension over a live connection to Artemis. While it works, nothing about it is shown. When it drops, the status bar shows Artemis: offline in red, then Artemis: reconnecting while the extension retries on its own. Select the entry to reconnect immediately.
Troubleshooting
Sign-in says no Artemis API was found, or the server cannot be reached. The server address is wrong or the server is down. Check the address on the login page and change it with Artemis: Set Server URL.
After sign-in, a warning says the server needs a newer Artemis. The extension needs Artemis 9.9.0 or newer. Use Artemis in the browser on that server.
Submit stays disabled. The extension only submits from the exercise repository that is open as your workspace, and only when something changed. Open the repository, save your files, and use Check workspace status under More on the exercise page.
Submitting is refused. Open Submission Setup on the dashboard. It shows whether Git is missing your name and email or Artemis refuses your access token, and it can fix both.
Iris does not answer. If the chat says it needs your AI choice, or that you chose not to use AI, select
Open Artemis settings, choose to use AI there, and then select Retry. Otherwise check that Iris is enabled
for the course and that your repository contains no .noai file. Artemis: Check Iris Health Status tells you
whether Iris itself is reachable.
Something else is wrong. Bug Report on the dashboard opens the extension's issue tracker.
